A Voter ID card, officially called an Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC), is issued by the Election Commission of India to registered voters.
The good news is that you can apply for voter registration online without visiting a government office just to submit the application.

Who Can Apply for a Voter ID Card?
Before applying, make sure you meet the basic eligibility requirements.
You must:
- Be an Indian citizen.
- Be at least 18 years old on an applicable qualifying date.
- Be ordinarily resident in the constituency where you’re applying.
- Not be legally disqualified from voter registration.
- Not already be registered as a voter in another constituency.
The Election Commission uses four qualifying dates each year: January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.
Eligible young citizens approaching their 18th birthday can also submit advance applications according to the applicable registration schedule.
Documents Required for Voter ID Card
You should keep the following documents ready before filling out the application.
1. Proof of Age
Accepted documents include:
- Birth certificate
- Aadhaar card
- PAN card
- Driving licence
- Class 10 or Class 12 certificate showing date of birth
- Indian passport
2. Proof of Address
You can provide an accepted address document, such as an Aadhaar card, Indian passport, eligible utility bill, bank or post office passbook, or registered rent agreement.
3. Passport-Size Photograph
A recent colour photograph with a white background is required.
The official Form 6 also contains provisions for applicants who cannot provide the listed documents. Additional verification may be necessary.
